The American Dietetic Association (ADA) released an update to their position on promoting and supporting breastfeeding. The statement reiterates their support for exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, and continued breastfeeding with appropriate complementary foods for at least 12 months. To accomplish this, the ADA emphasizes that dietetics professionals have an essential role in maintaining their own competency in order to effectively educate mothers and advocate for breastfeeding in their agencies and communities. The statement, co-authored by Rachelle Lessen, MS, RD, IBCLC, appears in the November 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (Vol. 109, Issue 11, Pages 1926-1942) as well as online at http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/
